Essential Oils as Alternatives for Root-Canal Treatment and Infection Control against Enterococcus faecalis—A Preliminary Study

چکیده

Since natural alternatives are needed in dentistry for the treatment of root canal, where standard irrigant is NaOCl with significant toxicity, aim study was to assess antibacterial properties non-chemical root-canal irrigants (aqueous extracts oregano, thyme, lemongrass, melaleuca and clove essential oils) against Enterococcus faecalis. For this, aqueous each oil (AqEO) were prepared. A solution sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) used as a positive which antimicrobial effects AqEO could be reported. The canals seven teeth inoculated 20 µL faecalis ATCC29212 inoculum incubated overnight at 37 °C. All instrumented irrigated corresponding AqEO, saline solution, then rinsed saline. Bacteriological samples canal post-instrumentation collected sterile paper points on culture media. second processing followed same methodology but involved only irrigation no instrumentation. Using instrumentation, thyme completely inhibited growth. Without oregano AqEOs reduced bacterial load seen direct inoculation, growth observed all after enrichment, except NaOCl. Nevertheless, turbidity enrichment media lower than control. In conclusion, showed promising effect, especially when instrumentation performed.

Antibacterial activity of different root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis

BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to compare in vitro the antimicrobial activity of different root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis, prior and subsequent to setting. MATERIAL AND METHODS Agar diffusion test (ADT) was used for evaluating the antibacterial activity of non-set sealer while the direct contact test (DCT) was used for after setting. RESULTS ADT: Except for To...

Diode Laser and Calcium Hydroxide for Elimination of Enterococcus Faecalis in Root Canal

Introduction: The ultimate goal of endodontic treatment is to eliminate the bacterial infection in the root canal system. While mechanical debridement combined with chemical irrigation removes the bulk of microorganisms, residual bacteria are readily detectable in approximately one-half of teeth just prior to obturation. Laser light can be used to destroy bacteria. This in vitro study was perfo...

Root Canal Irrigation: Chemical Agents and Plant Extracts Against Enterococcus faecalis

BACKGROUND There are various microorganisms related to intra and extra-radicular infections and many of these are involved in persistent infections. Bacterial elimination from the root canal is achieved by means of the mechanical action of instruments and irrigation as well as the antibacterial effects of the irrigating solutions. Enterococcus faecalis can frequently be isolated from root canal...

Inhibitory activity of root canal irrigants against Candida albicans, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus.

The present study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of three root canal irrigants against Enterococcus faecalis, Candida albicans, and Staphylococcus aureus. These microorganisms were incubated in the presence of citric acid (6 and 10%), EDTA (17%), and NaOCl (0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.25%). Agar diffusion tests were performed and redox indicator resazurin was used to evaluate the inhibitory effe...
